The Steamfitter-Pipefitter Apprenticeship at Northwestern Polytechnic trains registered apprentices to lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain, and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals, or fuel for heating, cooling, lubricating, and other industrial processes, working from blueprints and mechanical specification drawings on site. Apprentices work with pipefitting tools, welding equipment, and pressure-testing gear in commercial buildings, the oil and gas sector, and industrial plants, both indoors and outdoors. The program combines employer-sponsored on-the-job training with blocks of in-class technical instruction delivered on campus in Grande Prairie, each running eight weeks. Apprentices alternate periods of paid workplace employment with classroom instruction, progressing through the required technical periods and on-the-job hours before qualifying for Alberta's Steamfitter-Pipefitter journeyperson certification through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
