Program details
Overview
Geological Engineering at Queen's University is offered by the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering, a department combining complementary Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering programs. The program applies geosciences, mathematics, computing, physics, and chemistry to engineering problems that involve the Earth and Earth materials, including infrastructure engineering and construction, mining and energy resource development, environmental engineering, forensic engineering, and forestry. Students learn to plan, design, and carry out geotechnical, geological, geophysical, hydrogeological, and environmental data acquisition, using methods ranging from manual ground-based surveying and drilling to advanced geophysical techniques and satellite surveys. Graduates prepare recommendations and reports on matters such as rock excavation, foundation design, groundwater flow, slope stability, and the effects of landslides and earthquakes, and contribute to underground and surface excavation projects, resource exploration, mine evaluation, and groundwater remediation. The program includes field experience components considered essential to geological engineering training. Graduates are employed by environmental firms, construction consultants, the oil and gas sector, geophysical survey teams, the mining industry, and government agencies in Canada and internationally.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (Smith Engineering) admits all first-year applicants into one common first-year program under the Ontario Universities' Application Centre code QE; students who complete first year choose their specific plan, including Electrical and Computer Engineering (Innovation Stream), Geological Engineering, Engineering Physics and Mathematics & Engineering. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U, Calculus and Vectors 4U, Advanced Functions 4U, Chemistry 4U and Physics 4U are all mandatory prerequisites, with no additional elective courses required beyond these five. Recent admission cycles required a mid-80s overall average for general Smith Engineering entry, rising to the high 80s for the Electrical & Computing Engineering stream and Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering. Applicants submit their OUAC application and official transcripts; non-Canadian-curriculum and non-native-English-speaking applicants must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application or portfolio is required for general Engineering entry.
