Overview
Environmental Geology is a Bachelor of Science (Honours) specialization (Plan Code EGEO-S) administered by the School of Environmental Studies in partnership with the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering. The plan consists of 99.00 core and option units, combined with electives to a minimum of 120.00 units. Core coursework includes general chemistry, physical geography, introductory geology, calculus, and physics, followed by oceanography, geological field methods, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology and stratigraphy, geophysical characterization of the earth, and further geology courses at the 300 level or above, including options such as geological field school, structural geology, paleontology, and geochemical characterization of earth processes. Students also complete sustainability courses in environment and sustainability, principles of sustainability, and applications of sustainability. Option units are drawn from environmental science, biology, and interdisciplinary humanities course lists, plus further science, computing, or writing courses. The plan may not be combined with a Geological Sciences Minor. It leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits science applicants under the Science admission category (QS), which covers Biology and Cognitive Sciences (QSB), Mathematics and Statistics (QSM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (QSP) sub-groups — including plans such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematical Physics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology-Mathematics, and the Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Environmental Life Sciences and Environmental Toxicology plans. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, plus two of Biology 4U, Chemistry 4U or Physics 4U chosen to match the intended plan's prerequisites, and two further courses at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application is required for general Science entry.
