Indigenous Teacher Education (Community-Based) at Queen's University is offered by the Faculty of Education as one of two Indigenous Teacher Education program formats, alongside a full-time, on-campus track. The community-based format combines intensive in-person learning weekends and blocks at community sites, including Akwesasne, Lambton-Kent, Manitoulin-North Shore, Mushkegowuk Territory, Pikangikum, and Tyendinaga, and at Queen's in Kingston, with synchronous online evening sessions, allowing students to continue working while completing the degree. Applicants may be admitted without an undergraduate degree if they are of Indigenous ancestry and can provide documentary proof as specified by the Ontario College of Teachers, or may be admitted with a completed undergraduate degree; all candidates graduate with a Bachelor of Education. The program is designed primarily for Indigenous (Status, Non-Status, or Metis) applicants and for non-Indigenous applicants who hold a university degree and are interested in Indigenous education, with priority given to Indigenous applicants. Coursework is condensed into intensive learning weekends across summer, fall, and winter terms, combined with supervised in-school practicum placements in First Nations and Ontario schools; some practicum requirements may be completed through paid teaching employment under a transitional certificate pathway.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants without an undergraduate degree must be of Indigenous ancestry and submit documentary proof of ancestry as specified by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) when they apply for certification; applicants with an undergraduate degree and Indigenous ancestry may submit transcripts from that degree instead of high school transcripts. The program is especially suited to both Indigenous (Status, Non-Status, or Metis) and non-Indigenous students with a university degree who are interested in Indigenous education; non-Indigenous applicants are also invited to apply, but priority is given to Indigenous applicants. All official transcripts must bear the institution's seal and/or the registrar's original signature.
