Program details

Overview

Film and Media at Queen's University focuses on the history, theory, and criticism of film, television, and new media, alongside training in the production of film, video, and digital media. Coursework addresses topics such as ideology and power, communication, aesthetics, advertising and consumption, economics, and spectatorship, and considers how other cultural forms including literature, painting, music, and architecture relate to film and television. Although based in the Arts rather than Fine Arts, the program treats media production as central to its curriculum, combining creative practice with a grounding in film history, theory, and criticism. Students may pursue the subject through Major, Minor, General, Joint, or Specialization-style plans, including the Media and Performance Production plan offered with the Dan School of Drama and Music and the Computing and the Creative Arts plan offered with the School of Computing; combined with sufficient electives to a total of 120 units, these plans lead to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree. The department is based at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts on Queen's Kingston campus.
