The MSc in Biology is a thesis-based research degree in the Department of Biology, normally completed within six terms (two years). Prospective applicants are expected to contact a faculty member as a potential research supervisor before applying, since admission depends on both faculty willingness to supervise and available funding and space, in addition to academic ability; applications submitted without a supervisor identified are rarely successful. Admission normally requires an upper second-class standing (a B+ average, or about 75%) or better in a four-year BSc. Accepted students receive a minimum two-year guaranteed funding package combining scholarships and fellowships, Queen's Graduate Awards, research assistantships, supervisor contributions, and teaching assistantship salary, with a teaching assistantship often included in the funding package. Students undertake original research under a faculty supervisor and supervisory committee, culminating in a thesis and defence, supported by dedicated research facilities in the Biosciences Complex.

Admission Requirements: Admission to the MSc program normally requires an upper second-class standing (a B+ average, or approximately 75%) or better in a four-year BSc, or an average of at least B+ across the final two full years of undergraduate study. Applicants must first contact a prospective faculty supervisor whose research interests align with their own; applications made through the School of Graduate Studies without first securing a supervisor's interest are rarely successful. Admission also depends on the availability of an appropriate supervisor and of sufficient funding and space, and is formally granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the Graduate Coordinator's recommendation.
