The Master of Laws (LLM) at Queen's University is a nine- to twelve-month graduate program that deepens legal knowledge and research skills for further doctoral study or careers in legal practice, research, or policy work. Students choose between a thesis (research-based) stream, comprising two mandatory graduate seminars, one additional course, and a master's thesis of up to 35,000 words defended orally before an examination committee, and a course-paper (course-based) option, comprising two mandatory graduate seminars, five additional courses, and a graduate research paper of 9,000 to 10,000 words. All LLM students complete two mandatory graduate seminars, Legal Research Methods & Perspectives and Advanced Legal Research, offered in the Fall term; most other graduate coursework is taken alongside upper-year JD courses. A Specialization in Political and Legal Thought is available for students focused on legal theory and philosophy. Admission normally requires a JD, LLB, or equivalent first law degree with high standing (a B+ average or equivalent); candidates without a prior law degree may be considered in exceptional circumstances if they hold a related degree. A completed LLM does not, on its own, qualify graduates to practise law in Canada.
