Overview
The Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MPL) is a two-year, five-term professional degree offered by the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) at Queen's University. The program covers urban and regional planning theory and practice, including housing, transportation, climate resilience, and community design, combining coursework with collaborative, project-based learning involving real clients. Students take part in field trips to Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, and may pursue an optional international studio or exchange. SURP is accredited by the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). The program is delivered full-time and in-person; students are expected to reside in Kingston during the fall and winter terms. Admission draws students from a range of undergraduate disciplines, including geography, engineering, architecture, environmental studies, and the social sciences, as well as individuals with planning-related work experience. Graduates work as planners in the public and private sectors, non-profits, and academia.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants should hold a four-year bachelor's or honours degree and are admitted from a range of disciplines, including the social sciences and humanities, engineering, architecture, and the natural sciences; those with planning-related work experience are also encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a minimum B+ average, with preference given to those with an A-average or better in the final two years of undergraduate study. A complete application requires official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a statement of interest describing the applicant's planning research interests. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an English language proficiency test score.
