Overview
Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic is a one-year, full-time certificate delivered at RRC Polytech's Notre Dame Campus. The entry-level program builds the knowledge and skills needed to perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered heavy mobile equipment used in construction, agriculture, and highway transportation, covering engine servicing, standard and automatic transmission servicing, hydraulic and air brake systems, and basic electrical work. Approximately 60 percent of training hours are hands-on, delivered in the college's diesel mechanics workshop, supplemented by related coursework in arc and gas welding, mathematics, science, and communications. Before starting, applicants attend a program overview session and complete a math and reading skills diagnostic to assess program readiness. Due to high demand, the funded domestic program is open to Manitoba residents only, with a separate intake available for international applicants. Graduates are prepared for entry-level heavy duty equipment mechanic roles.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 graduation, or final-year enrolment with results due by 15 July for fall entry, including one credit each of Grade 12 English (40S), Grade 12 Math (40S), and Grade 10 Science (20F). Applicants who completed three years of full-time secondary education in Canada, the US, or an ELR-exempt country in English meet the language requirement; others must submit one of RRC Polytech's approved certificate-level assessments: IELTS Academic (overall 6.0, no band below 5.5), CAEL (overall band 60), PTE (overall 54, minimum 50 per skill), Duolingo (115 or above, minimum 95 per section), or TOEFL iBT (4.0 overall, minimum 3.5 per component). Applicants 19 or older who have been out of high school for at least a year may qualify as mature students by completing or enrolling in Grade 10 English (20S), Grade 10 Math (20S), and Grade 10 Science (20F), or RRC's Academic Foundations program. Due to high demand, this funded domestic program is open to Manitoba residents only, with applications from non-residents cancelled without refund of the application fee; a separate intake is available for international applicants.
