Overview
This graduate certificate equips working professionals to lead sustainable community initiatives through an online urban lab, examining the social, ecological, and economic dimensions of local change. Working alongside municipalities and local organizations, students apply systems-thinking, decision-making, and community-planning principles to a real-world project. The certificate is delivered completely online, with three courses (Core Principles of Sustainable Community Development, Applied Community Development Case Studies, and the Sustainable Community Development Collaboratory) taken one at a time over ten weeks each, plus a required non-credit introduction to academic integrity at the outset. Standard admission requires a four-year undergraduate degree in a related field and normally at least three years of relevant full-time work experience; applicants who fall short are considered for flexible admission with normally at least five years of relevant full-time work experience. Admission decisions weigh the applicant's balance of work and life experience, including volunteer and community activities and related training, alongside a personal statement, two letters of reference, and a detailed résumé.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires completion of a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree in a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution, normally with at least three years of relevant full-time work experience. Flexible admission applies to applicants with normally at least five years of relevant full-time work experience, with admission based on the applicant's balance of work and life experience, volunteer activity and related training. The programme page defers to Royal Roads University's institution-wide English language requirement for applicants whose first language is not English or who were not educated in English: for third-year-entry and graduate programs, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Applicants also submit official transcripts, a personal statement, a detailed résumé and reference letters.

Start Date:October
Application Deadline:Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
