Program details

Overview

This two-year diploma prepares students to apply scientific, technical, and medical principles to laboratory testing within healthcare settings. The curriculum spans clinical pathology, microbiology, hematology, histology, and serological testing, with explicit attention to professional responsibility: scope of practice, ethics, communication, critical thinking, accountability, and professional collaboration are built into coursework rather than left to on-the-job learning alone. Instruction is delivered in a blended format at SAIT's Main Campus combined with online components. The program is structured across two distinct years: the first concentrates on classroom instruction and applied simulated laboratory training, while the second shifts to real-world clinical experience through an in-depth practicum at partner clinical sites alongside continued simulation activities. This progression gives students a controlled foundation before moving into live clinical work. The program suits candidates with fine motor skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to tolerate extended personal protective equipment use, shift work, and exposure to blood and tissue samples, alongside solid critical-thinking ability. Graduates go on to work in laboratory environments including hospitals, medical diagnostic centres, and specialized research facilities, joining what the program describes as one of the largest groups of healthcare professionals in Canada. The diploma accepts international applicants and meets Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility requirements.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants need the same four courses each at 70% or more (Math 30-1 at 70% or Math 30-2 at 75%, English Language Arts 30-1, Chemistry 30, Biology 30), combined for an overall average of at least 75%, plus a mark of at least 50% on the School of Health and Public Safety's entrance testing. SAIT accepts recognised high school course equivalents for applicants educated outside Alberta, and applicants educated outside Canada must provide an international document assessment showing they meet the same standard. All applicants, including those educated in Canada, must demonstrate English language proficiency before admission (SAIT admissions, English Proficiency). SAIT's institution-wide scale accepts IELTS Academic at 6.0 in each skill, TOEFL iBT at a total score of 4.5 with a 4.5 minimum per section, PTE Academic at 53, the Duolingo English Test at 115 overall with 95 minimum per sub-score, and CAEL at 60 overall with 60 in each skill, among other accepted tests. Applications go through SAIT's online portal with the standard non-refundable fee (CAD 120 domestic, CAD 175 international); international applicants should confirm the program's own international-applicant and Post-Graduation Work Permit status.
