Overview
Continuing Care Assistant is a 32-week certificate at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, offered at the Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert campuses, that prepares students to support clients with physical and cognitive impairments across care settings. Coursework covers addressing individual psychosocial needs, communication skills, personal care assistance, dementia management, and gerontology. Training combines classroom instruction with lab-based learning and two clinical placements totalling six weeks in long-term care facilities. The program has January and August intakes and is also offered part-time through distance education at some locations, with on-site labs, clinicals, or practicums required for those offerings. Admission requires Grade 12 or 15 approved post-secondary credits, a minimum age of 18 by December 31 of the admission year, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic's English Language Requirement, along with required health and safety certifications before clinical placement.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need Grade 12 or successful completion of 15 approved post-secondary credits, and must be at least 18 years old as of December 31 in the year of admission. Applicants must meet the English Language Requirement and, prior to clinical placement, provide a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search, current immunization records, Standard First Aid and CPR (Heartsaver CPR AED Level C or equivalent), N95 respirator mask fit testing, current WHMIS certification, and current Transferring Lifting Repositioning (TLR) and Professional Assault Response Training (PART) Intermediate certification. International applicants require a co-op work permit to complete practicum requirements. Applicants who do not meet the Grade 12 requirement may qualify through ACCUPLACER testing with minimum scores of 250 in Arithmetic, 247 in Reading, and 243 in Writing.
