Overview
Water Science is one of five streams within Simon Fraser University's Environmental Science major, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree from the Faculty of Environment. The stream focuses on the role of water in Earth systems, covering weather and climate, geomorphology, and related environmental processes alongside the broader Environmental Science curriculum. Students in the Environmental Science major complete 120 units in total, including at least 44 upper-division units, and are subject to University and Faculty of Environment degree regulations; a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 is required for continuation and graduation. Students declare the Water Science stream, rather than the general Environmental Science stream or the other specialized options (applied biology, coastal and marine science, and watershed science), by meeting with an academic advisor or submitting the program's online declaration form.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Water Science is one of five streams within the Environmental Science BSc major in the Faculty of Environment; the stream is chosen after admission, so applicants are admitted through the general Environmental Science / Physical Geography (BSc) route. This requires a minimum of five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at a minimum of 70 percent, or the equivalent AP or IB course. Unlike the faculty's BA route, the BSc route requires at Grade 11 all of Science 11, Chemistry 11 and Physics 11 in addition to English 11, Math 11 and one Social Studies 11 course. At Grade 12, Course List A must include the English requirement plus two of Anatomy and Physiology 12 (Biology 12), Calculus 12, Chemistry 12 or Physics 12, along with one further List A humanities or social-science course. Admission is evaluated holistically across all approved Grade 11 and 12 marks; SFU does not publish a fixed minimum competitive average for this stream.
