Earth System Science (ESYS), offered by McGill's Faculty of Science, examines the links between the Earth's biological, chemical, physical, and human subsystems, including the cycling of energy and matter through the biosphere, atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, and solid Earth. The program draws on ecology, environmental science, geography, geology, meteorology, and oceanography, and addresses global challenges including biogeochemical cycles, climate variability and change, land use change, energy and resources, earth hazards, and earth-atmosphere observation. Coursework includes the physics of the atmosphere, atmospheric chemistry, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Graduates go on to careers in environmental consulting, reinsurance risk assessment, product life-cycle management, software development linking science and policy, and roles in government and non-governmental organizations covering environmental assessment, climate change mitigation, and natural hazard evaluation, as well as graduate study in related disciplines.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants apply to the Faculty of Science under the Physical, Earth, Math and Computer Sciences Group, which covers both Earth System Science and the Environment major offered through the Bieler School of Environment. Quebec CEGEP applicants need Biology I, Chemistry I and II, Math I, II and III, and Physics I, II and III from a previous DEC, or the equivalent New Science or Arts & Science DEC courses. Applicants presenting all prerequisites generally have an advantage, but a minimum of four prerequisites — Math I and II plus any two science prerequisites — is still considered, with missing courses added onto the McGill program. Applicants completing the Sciences, lettres et arts DEC are eligible for every B.Sc. program without prerequisite penalty, though missing coursework is completed at McGill. For September 2026 entry, McGill sets a minimum overall R-Score of 28.0 and a minimum core math/science R-Score of 28.0 for this group.
