Overview

Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg is a Bachelor of Arts offered in three-year, four-year, and Honours formats, with a Minor also available. The degree is interdisciplinary, drawing electives from Anthropology, History, Indigenous Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's and Gender Studies alongside a core of required Criminal Justice courses. After completing required coursework, students may pursue a field placement or a research practicum. Delivery is on the Winnipeg campus. The program page names admission to law school as a suited outcome, and recommends the Honours option for students planning graduate study in Criminal Justice specifically. Career paths cited include law enforcement at all levels, federal or provincial corrections, border services, social service provision and community support work, research analysis and government policy work, and roles with organizations advocating for justice-system change. The program is presented as suiting students interested in the social-science study of crime, law, and the justice system, whether their goal is direct employment in policing, corrections, or advocacy, or further academic study in law or criminal justice at the graduate level.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program page defers to The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements and states that no specific high school courses are required. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who are not from an English-exempt country, must meet the university's English proficiency requirement, set out on The University of Winnipeg's own admission requirements page: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall; TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 (86 overall with no component below 20 for tests taken before that date); Duolingo English Test 120; Pearson PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60 (CAEL online 70); LanguageCert Academic 67; or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 180, with results no more than two years old. International applicants apply online through the university's application portal and pay a non-refundable CAD $120 application fee, with official transcripts sent directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office; recommended international deadlines are June 15 for Fall (September), October 15 for Winter (January), and February 15 for Spring (May), and applying three to four months ahead is encouraged to allow time for study-permit processing.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
