The Master's in Language Sciences (Maitrise en sciences du langage) is a 45-credit graduate program at Universite de Sherbrooke's Campus principal, offering a research-based stream and a coursework-based stream. Both combine theoretical and practical training in analyzing linguistic phenomena across phonetics, phonology, semantics, lexicology, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics, with particular attention to Quebec French, linguistic variation, the history of French, multilingualism and second-language acquisition. The research stream requires a memoire-preparation course and a 15-credit thesis, plus 21 elective credits from linguistics courses; the coursework stream requires an essay-preparation course and a 6-credit essay, plus 36 elective credits from the same course list. Both streams train students to conceptualize a research question on the linguistic analysis of French or another language and to develop rigorous strategies to address it. The program is offered full-time for the research stream and full-time or part-time for the coursework stream, admitting students at the fall, winter and summer terms.
