This program prepares students to teach French, mathematics, or social-studies-domain subjects at the secondary level, offered in French, Mathematics, and Social Studies (univers social) concentrations. It provides foundational training in education, developing knowledge, skills, professional competencies, and attitudes suited to adolescent learners, and integrates subject content with teaching method. Delivered over 120 credits across 8 sessions at the Rouyn-Noranda campus (all three concentrations) and the Mont-Laurier campus (French and Mathematics concentrations only), the program builds progressively toward the thirteen professional competencies in Quebec's Reference Framework for Professional Competencies (MEQ, 2020) through coursework and supervised practicums. Graduates receive a teaching certificate following a favourable recommendation from the university, qualifying them to teach their concentration subject at the secondary level.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: For the French and Social Studies (Univers social) concentrations, applicants need a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC) or equivalent, with an interview if required. For the Mathematics concentration, applicants need a DEC plus completed college-level differential calculus, integral calculus, and linear algebra (or a DEC in Natural Sciences, or a vocational DEC in a relevant program with those same math courses). Under the experience route for French and Social Studies, applicants must be at least 21 with at least six months of full-time relevant experience in an educational institution, an interview, and a statement of motivation; for Mathematics, applicants must be at least 21 with experience applying mathematical or scientific knowledge, documented and subject to an interview, and may be admitted conditional on passing an upgrading course. All applicants must demonstrate French proficiency per UQAT's institutional policy. Admission decisions are issued once a sufficient number of applications is reached, and course delivery at the Mont-Laurier campus may be in person or by videoconference. A declaration of criminal record is required for practicum placement and teaching certification.
