Overview
This 45-credit graduate program prepares registered nurses for the specialized nurse practitioner in primary care (IPSPL) role, combining advanced nursing practice with delegated medical activities under Quebec's Nurses Act. It is offered jointly by UQAT, UQTR, UQAC, UQAR and UQO within the Universite du Quebec network, and follows completion of a 30-credit graduate diploma (DESS) in the same profile, which is a prerequisite for admission. The curriculum is organized across four sessions and includes family health, ethical and legal aspects of advanced practice, several advanced clinical-evaluation courses, primary-care practice courses covering endocrine, hematological, immunological, musculoskeletal, neurological, and genitourinary conditions, and a culminating 21-credit consolidation clinical placement. Most courses are offered at a distance, alongside the required clinical training. Graduates are authorized to diagnose illnesses, order diagnostic tests, and prescribe and adjust pharmacological treatments within their scope of practice. The credential is a Maitrise es sciences.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Standard entry requires prior completion of UQAT's 30-credit graduate diploma (DESS) in nursing sciences, IPSPL profile, with a cumulative average of at least 3.0 on 4.3; completing the DESS is itself a condition of admission to this Master's profile. Candidates who completed the DESS at another Quebec university must also be a registered nurse holding a valid OIIQ practising licence, hold a bachelor's degree in nursing with a cumulative average of at least 3.2 on 4.3, have recent undergraduate-level knowledge of nursing foundations, research methods, and statistics, sufficient knowledge of English, at least 3,360 hours of clinical nursing practice including 1,680 hours with the specialty's target clientele, and a satisfactory score on the admission committee's selection grid; these candidates undergo a selection interview and an academic-file review to determine equivalency with UQAT's DESS.
