This 45-credit, thesis-based Master of Arts trains researchers and specialists in theoretical and descriptive linguistics, and in the relationship between language and society. Students build the analytical skills required to describe languages and evaluate linguistic theories, choosing among areas of expertise such as Quebec French, lexicology, computational linguistics, morphology, phonetics, semantics, sociolinguistics and terminology. The program combines coursework with a research thesis supervised by a faculty member, and is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study. Courses are scheduled during the day and evening, with some offered at a distance, in hybrid format, or comodally. Admission requires confirming a research supervisor among the program's professors before applying. The degree prepares graduates for doctoral studies or professional work in language description, language policy, computational linguistics and related fields requiring advanced linguistic analysis.
