Students may enter the major in any semester and have access to the university's arboretum, herbarium and specialized growth facilities alongside hands-on labs and field courses. The Honours major requires 20.00 credits, completed over the standard eight-semester, four-year full-time course of study used across University of Guelph Bachelor of Science programmes; a five-year co-op option including four work terms totals 22.00 credits. Graduates are prepared for careers in plant breeding, agriculture, environmental science, biotechnology and related research or industry roles.
