Overview
Environment and Toxicology is a Specialist science program at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, jointly sponsored by the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the School of the Environment. The interdisciplinary curriculum spans the social, physical and life sciences to study the effects of chemicals on human health and behaviour and on whole ecosystems, covering both therapeutic and environmental chemical exposures. Students integrate environmental and life science with clinical toxicology and risk assessment through lectures, tutorials, laboratory work and a senior independent research project supervised by a faculty member. The 14.0-credit program runs from first-year Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics through required coursework in the Third and Fourth Years. Enrolment is limited: students apply after completing 4.0 credits and specific prerequisite courses, with a minimum grade average that changes each year. Graduates pursue careers in scientific research, environmental science, conservation, government and consulting, and the chemical, manufacturing and agriculture industries. It forms a four-year Honours Bachelor of Science degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario applicants apply through OUAC 101/105 and need the OSSD with six 4U/M subjects including English (ENG4U/EAE4U), Biology (SBI4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U) and Chemistry (SCH4U); Physics is recommended. Enrolment in the Environment and Toxicology Specialist is limited: after completing 4.0 credits including BIO120H1, BIO130H1, (CHM135H1, CHM136H1)/CHM151Y1 and 1.0 mathematics or physics credit, students need a minimum grade average in the required courses that changes each year with demand; meeting the minimum does not guarantee a space. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's English proficiency requirement via an accepted test (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo, CAEL or Cambridge C1/C2) unless exempt.
