Hons in Biology

Biology is an Honours Specialization offered by the Department of Biology in Western University's Faculty of Science. The module requires 10.0 courses following a first-year foundation in biology, chemistry, physics and calculus: a 2.5-course core spanning biochemistry, genetics, cell biology and physiology, plus a statistics requirement and an organic-chemistry-linked course. At least 4.0 courses at the 2200 level or above are drawn from the Department of Biology, Earth Sciences, or Basic Medical Sciences disciplines such as Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, or Physiology, with at least 1.5 of these courses including a laboratory component. Students complete a further 1.5 courses at the 4000 level, including an upper-year research or literature-based course. Teaching is based on Western's main campus in London, Ontario. The broad course selection lets students shape the degree toward areas such as molecular biology, ecology, physiology or biomedical sciences ahead of graduate study or careers in the life sciences.
