Synthetic Biology is an Honours Specialization offered by the Department of Biology in Western University's Faculty of Science, leading to an Honours Bachelor's degree. The module comprises 10.5 courses combining biochemistry, biology, and chemistry with elective coursework, and concludes with a 1.5-course independent research project providing supervised laboratory research experience. Students typically enter the specialization after completing first-year science requirements, which include introductory biology, chemistry, mathematics, and a physics course. As an Honours program, students must maintain the module's continuation requirements throughout the degree. The curriculum combines core life-science training with an applied, research-based capstone, giving students exposure to experimental design and laboratory techniques used in the field of synthetic biology before graduation. The program is delivered as part of the standard undergraduate Honours Bachelor of Science curriculum within the Faculty of Science.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry to the Honours Specialization in Synthetic Biology requires completion of first-year science requirements with no failures, including one of Biology 1001A/1002B, one of Chemistry 1301A/B and 1302A/B, a mathematics course, and a minimum mark of 60% in one of the specified Physics half-courses (which may be completed by the end of Year 2). Students must achieve an average of at least 70% across 3.0 principal courses, with no mark below 60% in any of those half-courses.
