BA/BS in Law

General Description: Objective(s) of a study programme: Training of highly qualified lawyers who share European values, who are able to protect human rights and participate in the formation of a democratic social state based on the rule of law in the Republic of Belarus through competent, critical and creative work in the institutions of the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, nongovernmental organizations, bar associations, law firms and business entities. Learning outcomes: 1.1.To know and understand the main theories of law representing the essence of law, its historical development, purpose and role in society; 1.2. To know the principles of national (Belarusian) constitutional and ordinary law and the contents of the legal institutes; 1.3. To know the principles of public and private international law, European Union institutional and substantive law and the key legal institutes; 1.4. To know the requirements of lawyer’s professional ethics; 1.5. To be able to apply the acquired knowledge in making independent decision in a complex situation that require innovative / alternative approach, timely adjustment of decisions and differentiation of priorities in international context; 1.6. To be able to apply acquired knowledge and the results of scientific research in practice by modelling solutions of specific problems in Belarusian, European and international context; 1.7.To be able to apply basics knowledge from studies of some social sciences, humanities, liberal arts and other science areas in the professional lawyer’s practice, research, for the development of broader outlook, erudition, analytical and critical thinking; 2.1. To carry out legal analysis of a problem in Belarusian, European, and international context; 2.2. To be able to apply the main research methods in the field of law; 2.3. To be able to collect information from various sources and to analyse it, for this purpose finding and using Belarusian and international information resources, to evaluate their reliability, to use modern information technologies and databases; 2.4. To be able to carry out independent research, to interpret its results in interdisciplinary context, by applying achievements and methods of the latest scientific research; 3.1. To be able to critically and systematically analyse legal phenomena and to apply the acquired knowledge in research and legal practice in national (Belarusian), international, and European context; 3.2. To be able to identify problems of legal regulation in national (Belarusian), international, and European context and to suggest possible solutions by applying acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and following the imperatives of enforcement (protection) of human rights and the welfare of society; 3.3. To be able to logically, critically and systematically analyse various legal documents, to understand their legal nature and meaning; 3.4. To be prepared to represent the rights and legal interests of persons in accordance with the requirements of professional ethics and the appropriate treatment of confidential information by using internal and surrounding resources in national and international context; 3.5. To be able to independently draft legislation projects for enforcement of law; 3.6. To be able to analyse and evaluate the activity of individuals and national (Belarusian), European, and international organizations in the context of legal principles and provisions; 3.7. To be able to develop and improve practical activities, implement innovative social services into it; 4.1. To make critical judgement on others’ and own activities, as well as knowledge and values; 4.2. To be able to work independently and in interdisciplinary team; to organize teamwork; to efficiently communicate and cooperate with specialists from relevant field, non-specialists and experts from other fields by exchanging information needed for effective quality cooperation in professional activities; 4.3. To be able to deal with tasks arising in the professional practice in unbiased manner and to reconcile conflicting interests; 4.4. To use correct written and oral language of the studies to make fluent, persuasive and argumentative expression of own thoughts; 4.5. To be able to fluently and reasonably express their view in a professional environment accepting responsibility for the development and strengthening of the legal profession by using professional language of the study programme and the second language. 5.1. To be able to learn independently and to plan the learning process in own field of activity, to make systematic reflection of own professional growth, to develop personal qualities needed for own professional practice; 5.2. To be ready to assume general ethical obligations associated with honesty, dutifulness, responsibility, punctuality, etc. 5.3. To be able to develop new ideas in professional practice, to adapt himself/herself to novelties and changing conditions; 5.4. To be able to plan his/her time and to organise his/her activities effectively. Distinctive features of a study programme: - In line with the university’s mission, the program provides studies for Belarusian citizens and enables them to learn about and evaluate Belarusian national law through the prism of European values, in particular the rule of law, human rights and freedoms, democracy; - The program is based on 30 years of university‘s experience in providing law studies; - Studies are closely related to the scientific and practical activities of the Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights and their results; - There are two languages of instruction: studies start in Russian language and is gradually replaced by English language; - The program pays special attention to the study of European Union law. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: Legislative, executive and judicial authorities, law firms, non-governmental organizations and other public and private sector organizations. Access to further study: Graduates can choose to study at EHU and other Lithuanian and foreign universities that offer postgraduate study programs in English, Russian or other languages. They can choose not only law but also other fields of study depending on the requirements for the entrants.
