Cert in Visual and Performing Arts, General

The performing arts certificate lets students who are deaf or hard of hearing learn standard theater operating procedures along with principles and practices of making theater accessible to deaf audiences. It is not offered on its own. Students must already be enrolled in an associate-level degree program at RIT's national institute serving deaf students. Requirements include several three-credit courses from the performing arts department plus a short practicum in theatre work. Graduates of the certificate often go on to professional or community theater, and it gives a base for continued study in theater and related fields. Applicants are asked to contact the program or an academic advisor. It serves students who want theater skills alongside their primary technical studies. Students interested in theater can pair it with their main program of study.
