Overview
BCIT's Advanced Certificate in Cardiac Sciences, Electrophysiology Technology (EP) option, is a part-time, distance-education program that is the only one of its kind in Canada. Delivered fully online, it prepares allied health professionals with ECG interpretation experience to work in electrophysiology labs, analyzing intracardiac catheter recordings for complex arrhythmias, heart block, and myocardial infarction. The program comprises four theory courses (15.0 credits) covering pacemaker concepts, electrophysiology, cardiac rhythm device implant, and advanced electrophysiology diagnostics and electroanatomic mapping, followed by a clinical practicum (32.0 credits) of at least 800 hours (23 weeks) at an approved electrophysiology lab, for a total of 47.0 credits. Applicants need a BSc or two-year allied health diploma, at least two years of recent clinical experience in cardiology or cardiovascular technology, completion of prerequisite theory courses, and a confirmed clinical site sponsor. Students may register in individual theory courses for professional development without formal program admission. The program is not open to international students.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This program has a three-step admission process. Step 1: meet BCIT's English language proficiency Category 2 requirement (English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent); hold a minimum two-year allied health diploma or a relevant BSc; complete the prerequisite courses CARD 3330 Electrocardiography and Pacemakers, CARD 3360 Cardiac Pharmacology, and BHSC 3302 Cardiac Pathophysiology (60% each) or equivalent; and submit a letter of reference showing at least two years of recent clinical practice in cardiology or cardiac sciences, plus a Clinical Verification form confirming a clinical site placement. Applicants with post-secondary studies outside Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, or New Zealand require a credential evaluation with course-by-course evaluation and GPA calculation. Step 2: department assessment of completed applications. Step 3: conditionally selected applicants must submit a Criminal Record Check. Prior to the clinical phase, students must also provide an immunization review, proof of current CPR certification, and recent respirator mask-fit testing results. This program is not available to international students.
