Carleton offers two graduate pathways in Mechanical Engineering: a course-based Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), which builds professional skills in advanced engineering topics, and a thesis-based Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.), in which students complete a research project investigating a specific engineering question. The program covers 15 specialized fields, including acoustics, aerodynamics, autonomous vehicles, combustion and heat transfer, machine learning applications, materials and manufacturing, mechatronics, and robotics and controls. Students have access to eight research laboratories and facilities supporting hands-on and research work in these areas. M.A.Sc. applicants must secure the support of a faculty member willing to supervise their research before being admitted. The program is delivered in person and normally takes one to two years of full-time study to complete, depending on the pathway chosen. Admission is offered for the Fall, Winter and Summer terms, though coursework is not scheduled during the Summer term. Graduates are prepared for engineering research, design and professional roles across the specializations offered.
