Program details

Overview

Techniques d'education specialisee is a three-year technical DEC that trains specialized educators to work with people of any age who have, or are at risk of developing, difficulties tied to social, emotional, intellectual, physical, behavioural or mental-health challenges, helping them improve their quality of life and social integration. Students develop competencies in observing and analyzing behaviour and social issues, communicating with clients, families and multidisciplinary teams, building helping relationships, designing intervention plans, leading clinical activities, and intervening in crisis situations. Training is practice-heavy: about 30 percent of hours are theoretical and 70 percent are practical, split between in-class exercises and four supervised internships totalling more than 900 hours. At this cegep, students complete at least one internship with autistic clients and one with at-risk or struggling youth, in addition to placements available with clients who have intellectual disabilities, mental-health conditions, communication or learning difficulties, reduced autonomy due to aging, physical disabilities, social exclusion, experiences of violence, or addictions. Admission requires no specific secondary-level prerequisites and is offered each Fall.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This three-year Technique program may receive more applications than it has seats; when that happens, selection is based on school-record quality. It states no course prerequisite of its own beyond Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. Across every program at the Cégep, school-record quality is the main selection criterion: for secondary-school applicants that means 4th- and 5th-secondary results as they stand when they apply, and college-level results count too for anyone who has already attended a cégep.
