Overview
The Medical Laboratory Assistant program trains students to collect patient specimens, carry out pre-analytical procedures to prepare samples for testing, and perform data entry, clerical, and reception duties in a clinical laboratory setting. The 36-week, full-time Certificate program combines academic instruction and hands-on laboratory practice over two 15-week semesters with a six-week clinical placement in a third semester at a hospital or clinic site. Graduates are eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science national certification exam, and the program is accredited by Accreditation Canada. Delivery is on-campus at the Grand Falls-Windsor campus for the academic semesters, with clinical placement completed at sites throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Admission requires a high school graduation certificate with a 60 percent overall average across specified English, mathematics, and science courses, or equivalent college transition or adult basic education credentials. Applicants whose first language is not English must present an IELTS Academic overall band score of 7.0.

Admission Requirements: For the 2026 academic year, applicants must complete one of the following: a High School Graduation Certificate with a 60% overall average including English 3201 (60% minimum), Mathematics from Advanced 2200/3200 (50% minimum each) or Academic 2201 (50% minimum)/3201 (60% minimum), and Science from Biology 2201 and 3201 (60% minimum in both) or Chemistry 3202 (60% minimum); a College Transition Certificate with English CM1060/CM1061, Mathematics MA1040/MA1041, Biology BL1025/BL1026, and Chemistry CH1035/CH1036 each at 60% minimum; or Adult Basic Education Level III Graduation with Degree and Technical Profile at a 60% overall average including the specified English, Mathematics, and Science courses. Mature applicants who do not meet the education prerequisites may be considered individually if at least 19 years of age and out of school for at least one year. Applicants whose first language is not English must present an IELTS Academic Test overall band score of 7.0, with Speaking 7.0, Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, and Writing 7.0.
