Overview
This apprenticeship trains students to repair and restore motor vehicles damaged in collisions, leading to Red Seal certification as an auto body and collision technician. Coursework and shop practice cover assessing structural and cosmetic damage, preparing repair estimates and plans, and carrying out repairs that range from minor dent and scratch correction to major structural straightening. Apprentices learn to remove and replace parts that cannot be repaired, realign or replace suspension and steering components, and restore vehicle interiors. The program also introduces work on mechanical and electronic systems commonly found on modern vehicles, such as air conditioning, exhaust, drivetrain, cooling systems, advanced driver-assistance features, and passenger restraint systems. As with other designated New Brunswick trades, training alternates between supervised employment in a collision repair shop and technical instruction blocks delivered through the provincial apprenticeship system, with NBCC acting as a training provider. Successful apprentices earn a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification under the Red Seal program. It is intended for people already employed in, or seeking to enter, collision repair and auto body shops who want a recognized trade credential.
