Program details

Overview

This apprenticeship prepares students for Red Seal certification as heavy duty equipment technicians. Apprentices learn to diagnose, repair, adjust, calibrate, rebuild, service and test both mobile and stationary heavy equipment used in construction, forestry, mining and related industries, working with engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, drivetrains, electrical systems and the electronic controls found on modern machines. Training moves between shop-based repair work and, where relevant, service calls in the field. The program combines paid, supervised employment with a heavy equipment dealer, contractor or service operation with periods of technical instruction delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, with NBCC serving as a training provider for the classroom component. Apprentices work under a certified journeyperson while progressing toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized across Canada through the Red Seal program. The trade is not compulsory in New Brunswick, though the Red Seal credential is broadly recognized by employers. It suits people already employed in heavy equipment service or repair roles who want to formalize their training and obtain national certification.
