This apprenticeship leads to Red Seal certification as an industrial electrician. Training covers the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, servicing and repair of industrial electrical equipment and its associated controls, including motors, generators, pumps, lighting systems and other components exposed to electrical power in an industrial setting. Apprentices are typically employed by electrical contractors or by the maintenance departments of factories, plants, mines, fabrication facilities, government sites and other industrial operations, and the program is structured around that working environment. Training combines paid, supervised work at an industrial or contracting employer with periods of technical instruction delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, with NBCC providing the classroom component. Apprentices work under a certified journeyperson industrial electrician while progressing toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized nationally under the Red Seal program. The occupation is not a compulsory trade in New Brunswick, but the certification is widely valued by industrial employers. It suits people already working in plant or facility maintenance who want a recognized electrical trade credential.
