Overview
This apprenticeship prepares students for Red Seal certification as bricklayers, a compulsory trade in New Brunswick. Training covers the construction and repair of walls, floors, arches, paving, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys and other masonry structures, using materials such as brick, natural and manufactured stone, tile, precast masonry panels, glass block, concrete block, insulated panels and membranes. Apprentices learn to erect, install, maintain and alter masonry work ranging from simple walkways to decorative exteriors on multi-storey buildings, along with the layout, cutting and jointing techniques the trade requires. The program combines paid, supervised work on construction sites with periods of technical training delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, for which NBCC is a training provider. Apprentices work under a certified journeyperson while progressing toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized nationally through the Red Seal program. Because bricklaying is a compulsory trade in the province, certification is required to practise the occupation independently. The program suits people already employed with a masonry contractor or construction company who are working toward the credential needed to advance in the trade.
