Trades - Apprenticeship in Machinist

This apprenticeship leads to Red Seal certification as a machinist. Apprentices learn to set up and operate both conventional and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, saws, grinding machines, drilling machines and boring machines, to cut or grind metal and other materials into parts with precise dimensions. Training builds skills in reading technical drawings, selecting tooling and machining processes, and inspecting finished parts for accuracy, preparing apprentices to work in manufacturing, fabrication and precision repair settings. The program combines paid, supervised shop work with periods of technical training delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, with NBCC providing the classroom component. Apprentices train under a certified journeyperson machinist while working toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized nationally under the Red Seal program. The trade is not compulsory in New Brunswick, but the certification is widely recognized by manufacturing and industrial employers. It suits people already working in a machine shop or manufacturing facility who want to formalize their skills and obtain a portable trade credential.
