Trades - Apprenticeship in Sprinkler/Fitter

This apprenticeship leads to Red Seal certification as a sprinkler fitter, a compulsory trade in New Brunswick. Apprentices learn to lay out, install, commission, modify, inspect, test, maintain and repair fire protection and suppression systems, including water-based sprinkler and standpipe systems, specialty systems such as clean-agent and carbon-dioxide suppression, and supplemental fire-detection equipment. Training covers reading and modifying engineered drawings and models, installing pipe supports, hangers and bracing, joining and installing piping and components, and connecting water supplies and equipment such as fire pumps, storage tanks and cross-connection controls, along with the tools, rigging and access equipment the trade uses. The program combines paid, supervised work with a fire protection contractor and periods of technical instruction delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, with NBCC serving as a training provider. Apprentices work under a certified journeyperson sprinkler fitter while progressing toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized nationally under the Red Seal program. Because the occupation is compulsory in the province, certification is required to practise it without direct supervision. It suits people already employed by a fire protection contractor who are working toward that credential.
