Overview
This bachelor's program covers the first year of undergraduate study at Queen's University's Smith Engineering, giving students a common foundation in engineering fundamentals, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, and design, before they choose a discipline to specialize in for their remaining years. Students who enter through the general first-year route are guaranteed a place in one of the available specializations at that stage; separate direct-entry routes also exist for some disciplines and lead to a more customized curriculum with earlier access to elective courses. Teaching is delivered on campus at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. The program suits students who have a strong interest in mathematics and science and want to explore different engineering disciplines, such as chemical, civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, or mining engineering, before committing to a specific specialization, as well as students who already know which discipline they want to pursue.

Admission Requirements: Ontario secondary-school applicants to Smith Engineering apply to the common first-year program through OUAC; Queen's engineering-specific prerequisites require five 4U courses: English 4U, Advanced Functions 4U, Calculus and Vectors 4U, Chemistry 4U and Physics 4U, with the admission average calculated from these five courses. Students are guaranteed their chosen discipline at the end of first year. Applicants who are not Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons registered under the Indian Act are assessed at the international rate and must meet Queen's English-language proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88 with a minimum of 20 in each of Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 60, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced 175 with no component below 170, or LanguageCert Academic 70 with no individual score below 65.

Application Deadline:Applicants to Queen's apply through OUAC; for Fall 2027 entry the application period opens October 1, 2026, with a November 20, 2026 recommended date to preserve access to the Major Admission Award application. First-year programmes in Commerce, Health Sciences, and Nursing close February 1, 2027, with a mandatory supplementary application due February 15, 2027; all other first-year programmes close March 1, 2027. The final deadline to submit supporting documents, including transcripts and English-proficiency test scores, is March 31, 2027. Queen's publishes the same OUAC-based deadlines for domestic and international applicants and does not describe admission as rolling. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
