Program details
Overview
This program leads to a Bachelor of Computing Honours degree through Queen's University's Cognitive Science Specialization Plan (COGS-S), administered by the School of Computing in cooperation with the Departments of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Philosophy, and Psychology. Drawing on principles of psychology, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience, and computing, the program explores the science of the mind and thought, examining how intelligence can be understood in humans and animals and applied to the design of computing systems capable of complex tasks. Core coursework covers discrete structures, computing fundamentals, cognition and computation, data structures, and artificial intelligence, alongside a required introductory course in cognitive science. Students then choose option coursework from two of three streams, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology, together with further computing-related options. The plan totals 93.0 units within an overall 120.0-unit Honours degree. Graduates pursue paths such as human-computer interaction, machine learning engineering, user-interface design, language-processing research, and computer vision.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Queen's School of Computing admits Computer Science, Software Design, Biomedical Computing, Cognitive Science and Computing, Mathematics & Analytics under the single Computing admission category (QD). Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U, Advanced Functions 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, and three further courses may be at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a mid-80s overall average for this category. Students are admitted to Computing generally and choose their specific specialization, such as Software Design or Cognitive Science, after first year once program-specific prerequisites and enrolment limits are met. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application or portfolio is required for general Computing entry.
