Overview
The Honours in Planetary Sciences program is offered through the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in the Faculty of Science and examines the solid Earth, its hydrosphere and neighbouring terrestrial planets. The curriculum applies chemistry, physics and mathematics to problems in planetary evolution, covering subjects such as petrology, cosmochemistry and structural geology, with coursework including introductory mineralogy, field geology and tectonics. Unlike the BSc in Geology, the program is not structured to meet the knowledge requirements of a professional geologist or geophysicist seeking employment directly after an undergraduate degree, and most graduates pursue further study. Students can complement the major with minors in geology, geochemistry or Earth system science. Graduates have gone on to careers such as planetary scientist, applied geophysics project manager, permafrost scientist and volcanologist, often after further education.
