Program details

Overview

Earth System Science is a Bachelor of Science (Honours) specialization (Plan Code EGPY-S) administered by the School of Environmental Studies in partnership with the Department of Geography and Planning. The plan consists of 96.00 core and option units, combined with electives to a minimum of 120.00 units. Core coursework spans biology, human and physical geography, oceanography, biogeography, surface processes and landforms, weather and climate, statistics, remote sensing and geographic information science, and advanced analysis of earth surface processes, alongside sustainability courses in environment and sustainability, principles of sustainability, and applications of sustainability. Students complete supporting units in chemistry or physics and in mathematics or statistics, plus option units drawn from geology, earth-system-focused geography electives such as northern and Arctic environments, watershed hydrology, glacier processes, and climate change, and interdisciplinary social-science and humanities courses on topics such as environmental policy, environmental justice, and Indigenous studies. The program may not be combined with an Environmental Studies Minor or a Geography Minor. It leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits science applicants under the Science admission category (QS), which covers Biology and Cognitive Sciences (QSB), Mathematics and Statistics (QSM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (QSP) sub-groups — including plans such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematical Physics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology-Mathematics, and the Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Environmental Life Sciences and Environmental Toxicology plans. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, plus two of Biology 4U, Chemistry 4U or Physics 4U chosen to match the intended plan's prerequisites, and two further courses at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application is required for general Science entry.
