Overview
The Sociology program at Queen's University, in the Faculty of Arts and Science, begins with two first-year courses, Perspectives in Sociology (SOCY 100) and Major Themes in Sociology (SOCY 101), which introduce core sociological concepts alongside training in university-level writing, argumentation, and research. In second year, students take core courses in sociological theory and research methods together with optional electives, before specializing further in third and fourth year. Course topics span criminology, race and racialization, globalization, consumer culture, digital sociology, policing, health and illness, gender, and law, organized around three research clusters: Media, Information and Surveillance; Criminology and Law; and Power, Inequalities and Social Justice. Fourth-year students take small seminar courses (maximum 28 students) and may complete a two-term thesis project with a faculty supervisor. Many students also study abroad in third year through the International Programs Office.
