Overview
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma at Red Deer Polytechnic is a two-year, full-time, on-campus program that trains students to operate ultrasound equipment for diagnostic imaging. Coursework covers cross-sectional human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, sonographic physics and instrumentation, and general, vascular, gynecological, and obstetrical sonography, including recognition of normal and abnormal findings. Patient care and safety are taught alongside simulated clinical learning, before students complete clinical practicum placements applying their skills in real healthcare settings. The program has been admitted to the Equal Health Education Accreditation process, with accreditation review ongoing. To graduate, students must pass all courses with a minimum grade of C and achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (72.5%). Students require a Co-op Work Permit.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: For 2026-27 (and 2027-28), applicants to Diagnostic Medical Sonography must have 75% in ELA 30-1, 75% in Math 30-1 or Math 30-2, 75% in Biology 30, and 75% in Physics 30. Equivalent courses are accepted to meet admission requirements. Admission is competitive, with applicants ranked by Grade Point Average, and students must obtain a Co-op Work Permit.
