BA/BS in Music at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, Canada is a bachelor's degree in Music programme. The programme is delivered on campus. Tuition for international students is CAD 392 per credit (CAD 223 per credit for local students).
This music program treats music as a way of thinking, creating, and belonging rather than performance training alone, and leads to either a Bachelor of Music (BMus) or a Bachelor of Arts with a music focus. Instruction combines weekly one-on-one lessons, participation in ensembles such as choirs or a rock band, and coursework in music theory and history, spanning traditions from classical to rock and approaches from solo performance to improvisation. Students develop digital production skills through the CMU Media Lab, covering recording, editing, and audio production, and coursework draws connections between music and mental health, culture, spirituality, and society. Delivered on campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the program requires every student to complete at least one work-integrated learning placement, which music students typically pursue in settings such as community choirs, arts organizations, worship contexts, schools, or media and production environments, alongside regular participation in student recitals and concerts. The program explicitly welcomes musicians from varied backgrounds rather than only those with extensive formal training, and it prepares graduates for varied paths including performance, teaching, composition, conducting, or music therapy, as well as other careers outside music that value creative and collaborative skills.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: CMU's Music program requires applicants to meet the university's general undergraduate admission requirements (Manitoba applicants: five 40-level courses averaging 70%, including English 40S at 60% and Math 40S; other provinces apply their own equivalent grade-12 course and average requirement) and to complete an entrance audition on their primary instrument or voice. The audition consists of two contrasting pieces or movements, a short ear-training check (singing back a melody, clapping a rhythm), and a conversation with faculty about background and goals; an accompanist is available on request, and applicants from outside the province may submit a recording instead of auditioning in person. Where English is not the applicant's first language, CMU's accepted tests are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 as published by CMU, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 60, or MELAB 80%; Duolingo is not accepted.
