Nursing is a technical Diploma of College Studies (DEC technique) offered at Cegep de Chicoutimi, with intake in both the fall and winter terms. The program develops the knowledge and skills needed to assess a person's health, determine care plans, and administer nursing and medical treatments to clients of all ages, from newborns to older adults, including palliative care for adult patients. Learning combines analysis of real and simulated case studies, laboratory work using mannequins and simulation equipment at the college's interdisciplinary health-simulation centre, and clinical placements where students gain hands-on experience across varied medical settings, including hospital placements with the regional health authority and in northern Quebec. A DEC-BAC pathway allows graduates to complete a nursing bachelor's degree at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi in two years rather than three, through recognition of college-level coursework. The program suits students who want to resolve complex situations, are attentive to others' needs, and enjoy working as part of a health-care team, preparing them to practise as a registered nurse.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a Quebec Secondary School Diploma (DES) meeting Cegep de Chicoutimi's general conditions: Langue d'enseignement and Langue seconde at Secondary V, Mathematiques at Secondary IV, Science et technologie (or Applications technologiques et scientifiques) at Secondary IV, and Histoire et education a la citoyennete at Secondary IV, or an accepted equivalency route. On top of these general conditions, this programme requires Sciences et technologie de l'environnement or Sciences et environnement at Secondary IV (Sciences physiques 436 for diplomas earned before June 2010); a missing Secondary V chemistry course is automatically added as a complementary course, and applicants short the science prerequisites can complete them through the Tremplin DEC route for winter entry. Because clinical placements are supervised by the CIUSSS, admitted students must provide proof of primary immunisation and undergo a confidentiality undertaking and criminal record check for public-health internships. No language test score is published. The programme admits in both the fall and winter terms.
