Program details
Overview
Fanshawe College's Tool and Die Maker programme is a block and day release apprenticeship for the Tool and Die Maker (430A) trade, leading to an Ontario College Certificate. Apprentices learn to design, create, repair and test prototype and production tools such as dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges and specialty tools, working with a range of metals, alloys and plastics. Training combines paid, on-the-job work experience with a sponsoring employer with shorter stints of in-school instruction, delivered either in the classroom or in an online training environment rather than through continuous full-time semesters. In-school training covers the trade theory and applied skills needed to progress through the apprenticeship, and is scheduled around the on-the-job portion of the programme, which makes up the majority of the required training time. Admission, sponsorship and progression through the apprenticeship are administered through Skilled Trades Ontario's registration system rather than Fanshawe's standard academic application process.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This is an apprenticeship programme and cannot be applied to through ontariocolleges.ca. To participate, applicants must first secure a sponsor/employer in the tool and die trade and then complete a registered training agreement through Skilled Trades Ontario; Fanshawe's in-school training is scheduled once the apprentice is registered and called forward by their employer.
