Program details

Overview

This apprenticeship prepares students for Red Seal certification as ironworkers, working across both the structural/ornamental and reinforcing branches of the trade. Apprentices learn to install structural and ornamental steel components, precast concrete members and glue-laminated timber products, and to place reinforcing steel in commercial, industrial, institutional and large residential buildings, as well as towers, bridges and stadiums. Training also covers erecting pre-engineered buildings and ornamental ironwork such as curtain walls, metal stairways, catwalks, railings and metal doors. The program combines paid, supervised work on construction sites with periods of technical training delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, with NBCC serving as a training provider. Apprentices work under a certified journeyperson ironworker while progressing toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized nationally through the Red Seal program. The trade is not compulsory in New Brunswick, though the Red Seal credential is recognized by employers across the country. It suits people already employed by an ironworking or structural steel contractor who want a broad, generalist grounding in the trade and a portable national certification.
