Trades - Apprenticeship in Metal Fabricator (Fitter)

This apprenticeship prepares students for Red Seal certification as metal fabricators, also known as fitters. Apprentices learn to make and repair metal parts used in buildings, bridges, tanks, towers, boilers, pressure vessels and other structures, including developing patterns and laying out, cutting and fabricating structural steel, plate and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Training also covers assembling and fitting metal sections and plates into complete units or sub-units, such as frames, plates, girders and chutes, that are later joined or welded into finished structures. The program combines paid, supervised shop or site work with periods of technical instruction delivered through New Brunswick's apprenticeship system, with NBCC serving as a training provider for the in-class component. Apprentices work under a certified journeyperson fitter while progressing toward a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification recognized nationally under the Red Seal program. The trade is not compulsory in New Brunswick, though the credential is recognized across the fabrication and construction industries. It suits people already employed in a metal fabrication shop who want a recognized trade certification.
