BA/BS in Engineering Chemistry

Engineering Chemistry at Queen's University is a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering program offered by the Department of Chemical Engineering within Smith Engineering, and is described as the only program of its kind in North America. Students are admitted through Smith Engineering's common first-year curriculum and are guaranteed placement in Engineering Chemistry after first year. The program is dually accredited, so graduates are eligible to pursue certification as both chartered chemists and professional engineers. Coursework integrates applied organic, inorganic, analytical, and electrochemical chemistry with engineering sciences including transport phenomena, thermodynamics, and reaction kinetics, preparing students for equipment specification and financial analysis in process design. Design work is organized around three areas: chemical diagnostics, alternative energy, and process synthesis, covering pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers, and green chemistry approaches to reducing the material and safety hazards of chemical manufacturing. The program concludes with a fourth-year independent research thesis. A Professional Internship option provides an optional paid 12-16 month industry placement through the Queen's Undergraduate Internship Program.
