Overview
Radiation and Environmental Monitoring Technician is a 28-week applied certificate program offered at Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Prince Albert campus. Students learn to use monitoring equipment to track radiation exposure levels of workers and work areas, and to monitor environmental conditions including air, water and soil for compliance with Canadian regulations. The program prepares graduates for two related but distinct roles: radiation monitoring technician, focused on radiation protection and health and safety compliance, and environmental monitoring technician, focused on observing the environmental impact of industrial and mining activity. Radiation monitoring technicians review and evaluate personal and worksite radiation hazards, monitor workers' exposure levels, and inspect equipment and practices against corporate and government safety standards. Environmental monitoring technicians observe environmental conditions and monitor the impact of industrial and mining operations against standards set by government and monitoring agencies. Both roles are employed across public and private sector employers. Part-time study is available, though part-time students must formally apply to the program to graduate and receive the credential, rather than simply completing individual courses.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 with a minimum grade of 60% in each of 30-level English Language Arts, Foundations of Mathematics 30 and Physical Science 20 (the former Math 20 and Chemistry 20 are also accepted). ACCUPLACER alternative admission is not applicable for this program at this time; applicants may instead qualify through 15 approved post-secondary credits. The programme applies Saskatchewan Polytechnic's institution-wide English Language Requirement: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with 5.0 per band, TOEFL iBT 81 overall with 19 per skill, PTE Academic 63 overall with 50 per component, Duolingo English Test 110, or CAEL 60 overall with 50 per component. Admission runs First Qualified/First Admitted, with applications opening September 1 each year; delivery is subject to enrolment.
