Program details

Overview

This advanced diploma program prepares students for careers as medical laboratory technologists, covering clinical chemistry and microbiology, hematology and hemopathology, histotechnology and immunology, laboratory practice, specimen collection and handling, and transfusion science. Delivered over roughly two and a half years, instruction combines classroom lectures, web-assisted learning, and practical laboratory work at the Saskatoon campus with clinical practicums totalling 31 weeks across the program, held at approved healthcare sites throughout Saskatchewan. Students should expect to travel for clinical placements and to work variable shifts, including early morning, evening, night, and weekend hours, during those rotations. The program suits individuals with strong aptitude in mathematics and science who are detail-oriented and prepared for a demanding academic workload. Graduates are qualified for employment as medical laboratory technologists in hospitals, community clinics, regional health districts, and private or public laboratories, with further education opening pathways to supervisory roles. The combination of theoretical coursework, hands-on lab training, and extensive clinical placement distinguishes this program from shorter laboratory-assistant credentials.
