This program leads to a Master's degree in Career Counselling (orientation), a 45-credit degree offered at the University of Sherbrooke's main Sherbrooke campus and recognized by the Ordre des conseillères et conseillers d'orientation du Québec. It offers two pathways: a course-based (type cours) pathway admitting in the fall term, and a research-based (type recherche) pathway admitting in the summer term, both available full-time or, where space allows, part-time. Both pathways share a 23-credit common core covering group and individual career counseling, advanced psychometric assessment, and supervised practicums, including a 6-credit advanced professional-practice placement. The course-based pathway adds 22 credits on educational approaches to career guidance, career and organizational interventions, and a 6-credit capstone synthesis report; the research-based pathway instead adds 22 credits built around a research project, a research seminar, data analysis, and a 9-credit thesis (mémoire). The program develops professional competencies for practicing as a career counsellor with young people and adults across varied settings, combining authentic learning situations with individual and small-group supervision, including practice in the department's own counseling clinic.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:2.70 / 4.3
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in career counselling (orientation) or its equivalent, with a cumulative average of at least 2.7 on a 4.3 scale, or equivalent academic results. Candidates holding an undergraduate degree in a different discipline may be required to complete preparatory coursework, which does not count toward the program and is determined during file review. All admitted candidates must demonstrate strong French proficiency, either through an exemption or by reaching CEFR level B2 (score of at least 400 out of 699) across all four fundamental competencies on a test recognized by the university; language weaknesses identified during the program may require non-credit remedial coursework through the university's Centre de langues.
